Eastern Mediterranean Sea and East/South China Sea. These “Seas” are expected to have abundant reserves of undersea resources, and the activities to develop those resources by the countries in the region are progressing. At the same time, unilateral challenges to the status quo, or any other form of illegal activities related to the demarcation of the sea areas, pose serious threats to regional and international peace and stability.

Is it possible for Japan and Greece, two “maritime nations” whose basic diplomatic policy is to comply with international law, especially the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to have any form of cooperation in order to achieve peace and stability in these “Seas”? Japanese and Greek academics and policy makers will gather at this workshop to analyze the latest situation regarding the eastern Mediterranean Sea and the East/South China Seas, and to propose a possible strategic cooperation between the two countries toward building a stable international maritime order in both regions and beyond.
